Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) began its life early in the 1970s, when John Grinder (Linguistic Professor from University of California, U.S.), decided to work along with Frank Pucelik and an undergraduate- Richard Bandler.
All three of them had a fascination with human excellence. Consequently, this charted a path for them to model behavioral patterns of geniuses.
John Grinder, Richard Bandler & Frank Pucelik began their NLP quest by modelling three people-
• Fritz Perls – Founder of Gestalt Therapy
• Virginia Satir – Family Therapist
• Dr. Milton Erickson – Hypnotherapist
Perls, Satir and Erickson were outstanding as professional agents of change, working in the domain of psychotherapy. They were successful on a consistent basis to enable their clients to heal and achieve the outcome of the sessions. Therefore, they were considered as geniuses and models of excellence by Grinder, Bandler and Pucelik.
All three geniuses – Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and Dr. Milton Erickson performed their magic in therapy sessions on clients- unconsciously.
As a result, they were not consciously aware of what they were doing, which made them get results in therapy.
Therefore, the geniuses could not present Dr. John Grinder, Richard Bandler & Frank Pucelik with a conscious description of what they do specifically, which generates the results that they achieve.
With little direct knowledge of each of the genius’s specialty and little understanding of the field of psychotherapy, Dr. Grinder, Bandler and Pucelik over two years, set out with enthusiasm bordering on fervor to explicate the performance of geniuses’ magic in therapy.
This lead to the development of the discipline, which is now known as NLP Modelling.
The modellers (John Grinder, Richard Bandler & Frank Pucelik) unconsciously absorbed the patternings inherent in the three geniuses. Subsequently, through language-based models such as Transformational Grammar and other ways, they then decoded consciously what the geniuses do, which makes them get results in therapy.
As a result, John Grinder and Richard Bandler could then offer in their NLP training courses the patterns the geniuses were applying.
The NLP courses they conducted proved that the NLP models were transferable to others since the learners could consistently get the same results as Dr. Erickson, Perls and Satir.
Subsequently, the learners could use the NLP models successfully in their own work as an NLP coach as well.
In this way, people in the field related to communication, behavior and change who attempted to learn how they can achieve successful results just as Dr. Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir- finally found the methods and techniques to achieve similar successful results on a consistent basis.
In addition to learning the patterns, techniques and tools in the NLP workshops facilitated by Dr. John Grinder and Richard Bandler, they could refer to several NLP books.
Therefore, through NLP Modelling, Dr. John Grinder, Richard Bandler and Frank Pucelik made explicit the tacit skills of the geniuses and NLP was born.
Hence, NLP modelling is the core activity in NLP. It is defined as the process of extricating and replicating the language structure, behavioural patterns and other patterns of an individual who is excellent at a given activity.
John Grinder, in his NLP book – ‘Whispering in the Wind’, defines NLP as:
“NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a modelling technology, with a specific focus on the set of differences that make a difference between the performances of genius and average performer in the same field of activity.
The objective of this modelling is to explicate in a way that is transferable and learnable, those set of differences. Thus, the core activity of NLP is the mapping of tacit knowledge on to an explicit model.”
In 1975, John Grinder and Richard Bandler presented their NLP modelling projects to the world, in the form of NLP Books.
In 1975, they published their first NLP book – ‘Structure of Magic’ in which they presented the patterns applied by Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls in their work. The patterns applied by Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls came to be known in NLP as ‘Meta Model’.
Meanwhile, they also published another NLP book – ‘Patterns of Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D.’ in which they presented the patterns applied by Dr. Milton H Erickson in his work. The patterns applied by Dr. Milton Erickson came to be known in NLP as ‘Milton Model’.
This lead to ‘Meta Model’ and ‘Milton Model’ being featured in NLP Trainings.
Subsequently, they wrote several NLP books together, such as ‘Frogs into Princess’, ‘Trance-formation’ and ‘Reframing’, which lead to the field of NLP spreading rapidly across the globe.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” – Lao Tzu
In the late 1970s, John Grinder and Richard Bandler stopped working with each other.
However, both separately continued writing NLP books and providing NLP courses worldwide.
In the 1980s, John Grinder went on to develop New Code NLP, which he refers to as “The Ferrari of NLP”. He developed New Code NLP with an intention to correct the flaws that he personally found in NLP.
Hence, a lot of people became curious to know the difference between NLP and New Code NLP.
One of the significant differences between NLP and New Code NLP is that the NLP techniques involve more of the conscious mind, whereas New Code NLP techniques involve more of the unconscious mind.
NLP and New Code NLP are now well known all across the globe, including India, with thousands of NLP Trainers and NLP coaches assisting individuals in improving their quality of life.
In fact, there are many NLP trainers in India itself that provide NLP certification in India.
As a result, if an individual is keen to become an NLP coach to assist others or even use some NLP techniques and tools only on themselves, it can be quite a task to select from which NLP trainer to attend an NLP certification in India.
To make the decision process easier, you can check the page- “NLP certification in India”.
On the page, there are several criteria of an NLP Training recommended by Dr. John Grinder mentioned, which can enable you to select from which NLP trainer in India or abroad to learn.
I am glad to share that my NLP Training Institute – Transformative NLP International (T-NLP) is the only International NLP Certifying Training Institute in India to provide both – NLP as well as New Code NLP certification in India, which is certified by Dr. John Grinder and co-developers of New Code NLP – Carmen Bostic St. Clair and Michael Carroll.
I have even been a mentor in their NLP training courses, including International New Code NLP certification and NLP Trainers Training.
I have also learnt directly from Frank Pucelik – (NLP Master Practitioner and NLP Trainers Training) and co-developer of NLP – Christina Hall (NLP Master Trainers Training).

“Never stop learning, for when we stop learning, we stop growing”
– Loyal Lewman.
“I attended the New Code NLP Practitioner with Abhay Thakkar. I really admire the way Abhay comes across as a trainer. He was able to explain the most complicated topics in a very lucid fashion altogether.
There was a mix of a homemaker, people not from a training background, people from training background like me and there was another NLP trainer participating with us.
The diaspore of the group was very vivid; still, Abhay was able to take control of the entire group and was able to clearly decipher the entire complicated topic in a very lucid fashion, so that’s what I really admire about Abhay.
In terms of exercises, there and then we were able to do the exercises, so the moment we would do the topic, we would do the exercises within the participants there and then.
The experience altogether was very enriching. I highly recommend this course to whoever wants to have hands-on experience in New Code NLP.
Abhay, I wish you all the best. May you achieve the peak in New Code NLP facilitation in India. Thank you!”

“I attended Abhay’s NLP course. He is really wonderful. The way he takes you through all the 7 days. It’s really different experience you get.
It’s more about the practicals and less about the theory.
The way you will grasp it, you will not even realize. On the last day we had evaluations and I was worried how the evaluation would go by. But the way he had gone through did not even have to go through the notes I had made. He made it look so easy. He took us through the different stages of New Code NLP coaching soo well.
I would really recommend anyone and everyone to go for it. It will really help you to improve your life as well as improve others’ life. Be a New Code NLP Practitioner from Abhay Thakkar.”
